beware when buying FM receivers though - there is some incompatibility in
the frequences (I'm not sure of the details) and RDS won't work.
I've seen several posts from people buying car stereo from the US (many
manufacturers use the same model number) who have been disappointed

Ah - I read something about this just a few weeks ago . . .
They apparrently use a different 'step' size in the frequencies, so a
digital tuning system will be set to suit, so when it crosses the Atlantic,
it's trying to find unused frequencies - you just get a 'hit' on the ones
where the two frequency sets coincide.
An analogue tuner should work fine, as it's all in the wrist action.
Also, a sensibly designed 'digital' tuner will tune in 50kHz steps,
not 100kHz, thereby catching all stations everywhere.
