Hi Guy's

Just been given the task of transferring some 1930's shellac recordings ,
date on the records are 3/4/37 , firstly which is the best deck to use , on
the records they have " Use only Trailing Needles " , I under stand that
modern 78 decks have a universal stylus !! Next these have been recorded off
the radio so there is a lot of radio interference , been using cool edit ,
sound forge , DC , but not found the right filter, HELP.

These sound like one-off's which are much more fragile than standard
78's. People experienced in transcribing 78's will often have a variety
of different sized styli available and choose which one to use based on
the make of record (or sometimes which sounds best). While a standard 78
stylus will work, you'll get better results if you choose the correct
size - it will make cleaning the recordings up much easier.

You might want to do a Google Groups search for some of Scott Dorsey's
postings on the subject on rec.audio.pro.

Cheers.

James.
