Most of my music is vinyl though I've quite a lot of classical and
trance CDs, also listen to radio quite a bit.
Thinking maybe something that plays MP3s as well as CD and radio,
clock would be handy as well.
Transportability is the major issue.

40gb iPod. Use iTunes to rip your CDs to mp3 at 320kbps.

If you're going to use an iPod / iTunes then it's better to use AAC
than MP3.

If you're starting from scratch and planning to only use the iPod/iTunes you
might be right but, having done a comparison of MP3 and AAC I decided there
wasn't sufficient difference to warrant me re-ripping all my CDs.

In addition, sticking with MP3 allows the use of players other than iTunes.
