It was once a useful place to come to gain insight into what was
available in the market place and to gain impartial reviews and possible
entries for prospective purchase shortlists.

Wouldn't that be better served by the many groups that do just this?

Indeed. However, 'audio' is accepted to be about sound or the reproduction
of it. Music is of course a part of that, but if you wish to talk about
that to the exclusion of all else, then perhaps use a more suitable group?
