Default "Upgrading" my amplifier - worth it?

(Keiron) wrote in message . com...
I have a Rotel RSP1066 pre/pro with RB 985mk2 multi channel power amp
driving recently purchased (and quite brilliant) Dynaudio Contour
1.3mk2 main speakers. I also have Dynaudio 42 surrounds and centre.
In terms of fidelity, it's only music that interests me, movies are
not really my thing. I have a handful of SACD/DVDA discs but the best
part of 1000 stereo CDS and I have to say I really enjoy the effect of
Dolby ProLogic 2 (in fact I prefer it to the more intrusive use of
surround channels on multichannel discs but that's another story).
I'm wondering, given I'm a bit cynical and sceptical about the degree
to which amplifiers can influence sound quality or character (compared
with say a speaker change) whether I would gain any benefit in adding
a "better" power amp for my front main speakers? Specifically I was
thinking along the lines of a Quad 909 (which curiously gets very
little mention and has no reviews on audioreview.com) What kind of
change could I expect?

I believe that the Rotel is a fine amplifier. I think you would be
very hard pressed to notice any difference between it and a Quad 909
(also a good amp) once the most basic of level matching and bias
controls are applied.

The Dynaudio speakers are fabulous for the size and money. You would
need to spend a significant amount to get "better" speakers. But it
does appear from your post that you are ver happy with them anyway.
:-)

Just sit back and enjoy your music. Watch the odd film too. There some
crackers out there.
