I've come across some sets where the remote control alters the volume,
balance and 'tone' of the phonos as well as the set's own speakers. Early
Philips Matchline was one. I doubt it's common, though, as later Philips
models don't do this.

Have you tried using a different input on the amp - say CD? This would
help to prove where the fault is.
