I was on holiday in Goa last year, and one of the most fascinating
items was reading the local English-language newpaper. The English was
grammatically perfect, but wonderfully polysallbic and straight out of
the last days of the Raj. It was a bit like picking up a London Times
from 1934!


I'm surprised. The quality of the writing in most Indian papers has been in
free fall since the early 90s.

The grammar may be perfect, but also rigorous and quaint. In fact, I believe
Wren and Martin (circa 1880) are still considered the grammar messiahs in
most Indian schools.
