I've got a turntable, amp, laptop and Cooledit.

I want to copy some LP's to the laptop to burn to CD.

When I connect the tape phono cable input to the mic socket on the
laptop the recording is too loud. I can't attenuate it enough but I
don't have a line in socket on the laptop.

Is there anything I can do?

- external USB sound card? - any recommendations

Only yesterday I was contemplating the saying, "there's nothing like the
right tool for the job, and this is *nothing like* the right tool for
the job."

Yes, you need a sound card; I don't use USB for this so won't try to
recommend. Suggest you begin with Google

Thanks Nick, but surely the laptop has a soundcard, it plays CDs it
has a line-out/headphone jack that I can put through an amp, the
problem is the lack of line-in. I am assuming from your post that the
mic in won't work - I've never used one before.
