Thanks Nick, but surely the laptop has a soundcard, it plays CDs it
has a line-out/headphone jack that I can put through an amp, the
problem is the lack of line-in. I am assuming from your post that
the
mic in won't work - I've never used one before.

Suggest you get a decent external 'soundcard' processor such as a
Soundblaster Extigy. This is all but designed to do this job
