I can quite accept that when you reflect on things you can see that
sweeping theoretical statements don't adequately cover the reality of
things. With a thread of 202 posts already, I'm all for cutting down on
misunderstandings on this tricky subject.
And all this started simply because I shared a bit of information
regarding some speaker cables I'd installed in my system...
But, I can assure you, there is a difference, it's not psychological,
and I've demonstrated similar effects to many people. There are some
people who cannot hear the difference between two different CD players,
and these people can't be expected to hear a difference between cables
either. But conversely, there are people (such as myself) who can hear a
clear and significant difference.
Of course there's an optimum. And the likes of Russ Andrews can go way
beyond this optimum. The trick is to get the balance between crap
freebie cables and OTT stuff (without getting into the realms of snake oil).
I did a similar test with a friend, swapping between freebie cable and
Cambridge Atlantic (£10 from Richer Sounds). I was sat behind his
system, he couldn't see which cable was in place. All he had was the CD
remote, and I'd shout "start" when the cable was hooked up.
Out of about 10-15 tests (lost count after a while) he was able to tell
me correctly every single time which cable was in use.
So much for "psychological" effects...
