Here's how it works: You fall for a ridiculous scam, and spend a
significant sum of money on snake oil. Your brain now has two options:

1) Admit that it made a foolish error of judgement
2) Cover up said error by persuading you that the sound has actually
improved

Brains are proud, and will always go for 2).
