Last night we* learnt a few things....
We learned that, if you are stranded in a desert and your GPS gadget is on
the fritz, you can determine Due North by pointing the hour hand of your
watch at the Sun and that bisecting the angle between it and the 12 o'clock
mark will point you Due South**. (Due North is 180 deg the other way....)
Make the necessary allowances for BST &c., naturally....
Well, if you have any sense, while the sun is up, you are hidden out
of the way, not going anywhere and trying to stay cool. Once the sun
sets you have either Polaris or the Southern Cross to show you North
and South. The best use for your watch is to flog to some passing
Bedouin to get him to take you to the nearest hotel.
We also learnt that Firewood Horns do *not* like SS amps and that if you
wick a 120wpc SS amp up too high the drivers will go West - simultaneously,
instantly, irrevocably....
Strange conclusion - I think you will find that those poor little
drivers don't appreciate 120W, whatever they come from. I did the
reverse myself once, with a Marshall 100W valve amp plugged into a far
too small speaker. I thought I was being very careful, but a lump of
mains hum while plugging in the guitar lead made for a very brief
sound, some smoke, and no further action.
We also learnt that Firewood Horns sound amazing on valves and SETs in
particular, but sound like poo on SS amps***....
Think you just wanted the one asterisk there. ;-)
(We also learnt that the halfway mark on a 4 wpc SET is as loud as the
halfway mark on a 120 wpc SS amp, but let's not go there... ;-)
Probably true - once your speakers are hitting the end stops, it don't
much matter how hard they are slamming.
* That's me and one other who posts here - not 'we' as in some sad act
desperately trying to engender/imply support for his own crackpot
theories/opinions....
** If it's an English Desert (East Essex, for example) and there is no Sun,
then you are ****t...
***Said it a couple of million times now - if it's horns it's valves, if
it's valves it's horns, or simply don't bother and SETs is best (by far)...
