time and money on anything modern.

I wouldnt say you fit an alarm to deter people nicking your car, if
you have a car worth nicking then a tracker or similar would be what
you need,

an alarm is to deter the pikey ****ers that smash your
windows and want to wrestle to get your stereo out, or whatever they
feel they need to steal from your car.

Yep. But his brand new Vectra will already have an alarm ! Changing it for a
better one doesn't really acheive anything !
