I've a handy little stereo FM transmitter, bought a while back off
EBAY. Just search for nice+FM+stereo+Transmitter, and it still
appears there from time to time. Does the job from laptop or
portable MP3/CD player -all around the car (or home).
Is that legal, in the UK?

No.

Thought not. Amazon have them though:

Hmmm, I'd be interested to know how a device costing $29.99 in the US
( http://tinyurl.com/3yq8 ) can cost £29.99 over here, unless someone's
taking a big cut somewhere along the line.
