What I might do is see if I can cut the carpet off and pre drill holes for
my screws then stick back down. If not, I might just screw over the carpet.
Ugly it may be but at least I have a strong box that wont fall apart.

Only problem I can think of is, unless they are gripper nails, that
actually bite into the wood/MDF, vibration might loosen them making the
box less rigid.
