Yup exactly. I normally use the flat headed black wood screws. Just use
three on each side should be okay as its already glued and nailed.

What I might do is see if I can cut the carpet off and pre drill holes

my screws then stick back down. If not, I might just screw over the
carpet.

Think of something like black japaned screws, they won't look so bad
againsta dark carpetted box. and if you went for something like dome
headed ones, and used them evenly, it might look like they were supposed
to be there.
