It could well be that the voltage drops when the unit draws current. I
would check the supply. Are you absolutely sure that it is connected
directly to a 12V supply and not to the "earthy" end of another piece
of equipment.

Try connecting the unit directly to the battery (via a suitable fuse
of course). If the fault goes away there is something wrong with the
supply wiring.

The other thing that comes to mind is low resistance on the output
side, causing the output chips to shut down. I assume you haven't got
loads of speakers in parallel.


it sounds to me like there's a loose connection on one of the
speakers...as it's cranked up, the vibrations are shaking it
loose.


Unlikely if all channels cut out.
