I'm using one currently to get my iPod through the car system (no aux input,
unfortunately). Sound quality is pretty good, but the source is what really
matters. The iPod has quite a low gain on the headphone socket so there's a
considerable volume increase required from the normal radio to the iPod.
Bear in mind that MP3 ISN'T CD standard unless you're using high bitrates,
so there will always be a difference in sound quality, but I have to say
that it isn't enough to spoil the listening experience.

My modulator has 3 frequency outputs all around the 88-89mhz mark. This is
OK (and the unit needs to be switchable or you'll get interference on other
frequencies) but certain areas of the county use these frequencies for Radio
2 and if you drive into an area with a very strong signal, it will drown out
the mp3 signal and there's nothing you can do but grin and bear it, or stop
the car and manually change the output frequency.

You're right about the wider range - if I was buying again I'd go for a unit
with a greater range of frequency options, which don't seem to be much more
expensive (I paid £40 for mine)
