Default Golf GTI mk3; where is Sony I/F box located?

Evening all

I have a mk3 golf gti 16v with the original Sony stereo (XR-6859RDS). I
removed it a few months ago for a 'better' unit, decided the radio reception
was worse, and put back the original Sony unit.

Now i have got no display on the Sony unit, but i know all fuses are fine
and power is reaching the unit fine.

I contacted Sony in car security who have advised me the unit must be
plugged into the I/F box for it to work. Basically there is a lead from the
I/F unit that plugs into the back of the Sony unit.

When i removed the Sony stereo a few months ago, i don't recall this lead
but it must be there somewhere. I've had the lower part of the dash off but
can;t find it. Apparently the lead from the I/F box is only about a foot
long, so maybe it is attached to the bulkhead somewhere.
The I/F unit silver and about the size of 2 cigarette boxes (if only i could
find it) and usually acts as a go-between the stereo and a cd-stack -
regardless of whether the car has one (mine doesn't).

if anyone know where the I/F unit is normally located it would really help
me!

thanks.
