Default Sony MEX-1HD - importing from memory stick

Got a Sony MEX-1HD hard disk head unit... the CD drive appears to have
died, meaning that I can't import any new music.

But according to the manual, you can import tracks encoded in ATRAC
format from a memory stick, so I could say encode on the PC and upload
to the unit. Unfortunately it doesn't say what format these files need
to be in.

When I encode a CD using SonicStage, apparently there should be a
"Memory Stick" option under Transfer, however there isn't. I've tried
copying the .oma files to a memory stick, but the unit says "nothing to
import". IIRC the files need to be .omg format, but the version of
SonicStage I have won't create these.

Any ideas, before I spend a fortune on replacing the pickup in the CD drive?
