Its unlikly it will produce enough output to hurt the speaker, but why
not be on the safe side, get a cheap pair from a second hand shop, that
way you don't have to worry.

That's funny! The proposed solution to a busted amp is a new pair of
speakers - - - -

Hardly. What Nick suggested was a pair of cheap, secondhand speakers.....

I knew that ;-)

I suspect his reasoning is/was that until the problem with the amp is fixed
it would be best to take a pair of expensive speakers out of the firing
line. But as the guy seems to be a bit of a wattock (my noisy Chinese valves
get a whack over the head or binned if they won't behave) perhaps he'd
better follow Pinky's advice and give up on valves - they are a different
ballgame and not for the feinthearted or congenitally dim.....

True, particularly if it is an output valve flashing over. When that
happens you find out all of a sudden just how much power you can get
off 400V or so of HT.

You've already been given the fix - buy a proper amp.

:-)

I just did:

Cracking little bugger for only 60 quid brand new with warranty!!

Is that really a control labelled "control" I can see there?

Unlike most (immature, IMO) sandampers, I can easily overlook its noisy
Phono Stage (which is otherwise plenty good enough for 'casual'), gutless
power delivery (claims to be 35 wpc - my 8 watt SET blows it into the
weeds), crosstalk (with radio coming through on the Phono setting almost as
loud as the Tuner setting) and concentrate on the incredible (at the price)
raft of bonus features - push button input selection, digital tone controls,
balance, volume, speaker attenuation (most of which appears to be available
on the included remote control!!) as well as the line out, headphone socket
and LCD status panel....

What on earth is this thing? And who is charging as much as 60 squids
for it?

Having already proved useful in that it confirms I will almost certainly
never give up valves in favour of sandamps, it is destined for my computer
setup where it will probably play internet radio/mp3s all day long (as a
'security measure' while I'm down the garage, if nothing else) - plenty good
enough for that and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to put a budget
system together but doesn't want a ****e old clunker from eBay for the same
sort of money at the heart of it!!

Have you seen what secondhand Cyrus IIs are going for on Ebay?
