For me, the curio is the modulation level on BBC World Service, both
on DAB and on DTTV. This is well above that for, e.g. R4. I can
appreciate that an HF AM broadcast might benefit from squashing right
up to full mod, but I can't quite see the point here on DTTV and
DAB... Makes me wonder if they are just supplying DTTV/DAB with the
same pre-compressed feed that is sent for use for HF around the world.

Only time I really listen to WS is after R4 closes down, and on DAB it
sounds truly diabolical. I've heard better 8-bit digital. ;-)

So have I. :-) However where I live the DAB WS is still far better than
on MW or HF. For large parts of the day it is essentially unreivable here
on MW/HF, and when it is, it generally suffers from all the defects of
long
distance MW/HF. Whistles, other stations in the background, multipath
'phasing' effects, fading to nothing, etc, etc. Hence compared with these,
the DAB WS is superb - at least for documentaries and news.

DAB you *can* get is always gonna beat other wavebands you can't get...!!
