Perhaps the problem is a parallel with one I encountered a few years ago. A
15ips recording and my only 15ips recorder died before I could transfer the
recording to CD.

I played it at 7.5ips and then simply time-converted the sampled data by a
factor of 2. The results came out surprisingly good despite my ignoring any
implied changes due to differences in the equalisations.

Also, if it's a decent recording, running it through a machine at double
speed will remove some of the treble due to the head gap extinction
frequency. And no software can recover that.

Perhaps I'm not following the above. By "head gap extinction" do you mean
the effect of finite gap width?

If so, I understand that to depend on the ratio between the gap width and
the *wavelength* on the tape. Thus, I'd expect the effect to scale with
speed in the same way as the conversion you'd have to make to process the
result. Am I misunderstanding what you are referring to? Must confess my
knowledge of this area is limited.
