Surely the equipment is a factor? The source/amp will have an effect on the
sound coming from the speakers which in turn (I agree) be affected by the
room's characteristics.

Otherwise we'd all be auditioning speakers with any old equipment?

You don't buy speakers to partner equipment (other than the obvious
question of power rating) but to partner your room. THat is the
interaction that determines the sound.
