Surely the equipment is a factor? The source/amp will have an effect on the
sound coming from the speakers which in turn (I agree) be affected by the
room's characteristics.
Otherwise we'd all be auditioning speakers with any old equipment?

Sure it is a factor. But it is a factor pretty much lost in the noise
compared to the room/speaker interaction factor. If you move a speaker
a millimetre sideways, that will have more effect than swapping from
one competent amplifier to another (note the word competent - there
certainly are amps out there that will make a real difference, but it
will always be a degradation caused by incompetent design).
Provided the rest of your equipment is at least adequate and suitable,
then the only big differences you will hear are due to room - speaker
interactions.
So there really is no option here than to talk nicely to your local Hi
Fi shop and arrange some sale-or-return demos. If the salesman knows
his job, you can describe your room to him and he may have some useful
suggestions to make. It is 99% probable though that they will have a
remarkable correlation to what he has in stock.
