Default £1000 on a separates kit - ideas?

Is there a TV in the room? If looks are important to you why not integrate
it with DVD and surround too? Yamaha RX-V100D (surround amp with DAB) 330
quid, DVDS-657 £150 (DVDA/SACD) or DVD-S1500 (£350), MA Silver RS5
floorstanders (£450). Then as you save you can add centre and surrounds and
be really happy. I'd go with the suggestion of finding a freeview box, with
a hard disk so you can timeshift radio and TV too.
