Too neat to waste...

I've no idea about the US, but when the first SACDs appeared on the
shelves in the UK they were priced at anything up to 24.99 IIRC and were
met with zero interest from Joe Public.
Not to mention the cost of the players themselves and that at least the Sony
players (IME) wouldn't even look at CDRs - a killer for me and, I suspect,
just about anybody else! In fact, the Sony I bought (at a fraction of new
price) was a return only so many days old from a 'disgusted punter' at the
local shop, who had been less than impressed that he wasn't told about the
CDR failure.....
(I got it dirt cheap in a quick deal because, for some reason, the original
buyer had shortened the power lead to only about 18 inches long....???)
The only people who took them on board and
started the silly hype were the comix writers, unsurprisingly. I believe
(I don't *know) that CDs, SACDs, and hybrids all occupy the same shelves
at more or less the same prices these days....??
You will be greatly heartened to know that the (switchable) CD/SACD on the
Sony player I had resulted only in a little bit more *loudness* from the
SACD layer, otherwise I could not determine any difference (2 channel only)
on the kit I had at the time and I sure as hell wouln't pay a premium for
SACD stereo....
