Rational is to sit down, listen and like the sound, and if that just
happens to be a baked bean tin and string then great!

If that view were held by all then the only product available on the high
street would be bean tins and string.
Fortunately, there are others who strive for better. In so doing, there is
progress for the benefit and appreciation of all (should they want it).
Clearly there are those that, having reached their satisfaction level, see
no reason to seek improvement *for themselves* - who would argue with that?
However, it would appear that they cannot see or appreciate why others do
not share their view.
Fortunately, designers, manufacturers etc do recognise this and perhaps that
explains why products ranging from out right rubbish to excellent are made
available to the consumer.

Scientific seems to mean, sit down and listen, then argue why the sound
couldn't possibly be good, even if it is!

In my view that simply is not the case. Would any deny that the application
of scientific principles etc is detrimental? While it would be fair to say
that a lax approach, or indeed complete disregard, in this area would
inevitably produce an inferior product, it does not mean that it cannot be
'good'.
However, it would surely be irrational to believe it to be 'best'.
