Because music is about emotional response, not just technical
perfection. If the job is to back up a video of "Grandmama's days", a
crackly Victrola does the job. (OK, Great-grandmama's days now :-)
I've got a favourite recording of Clinton Ford with the George
Chisholm band which starts with an announcement "..recorded on
Parlophone records.." with a crackle background. Clinton (who stays
with me sometimes) tells how he crumpled a sheet of Cellophane during
the announcement. Also, he recounts how the mono and stereo releases
would be recorded separately. On a jazz record you often got quite
different performances. If one session was before lunch, one after,
you might get VERY different performances ;-)
"Grungeliser" VST plugin, as supplied with Cubase, may do the job.
