The background noise is only present when the stylus hits the vinyl - so
I guess its not a ground issue? Does it sound excessive?



Yes.

If you have tried earth on and earth off, gently feel the cartridge leads up
and see if you can induce or stop hum there - the way the wires are dressed
can sometimes cause a hum, as well as other things...
