OK, I've got a mystery I need cleared up before I can do anything else:
If I record in Stereo (with the amp's balance swung over to one speaker, in
front of the single mic) I get this:

Do you mean one's more clipped than the other ? Why does this surprise you ?

I think he means that the second one apparently clips at -6dB
I hadn't spotted that. I'm sure that's becasue of the way the monoing is done.
