Can anyone recommend headphones in the £40 - £75 range for use with a
hi-fi system, mp3 players, possibly even for TV or PC use. They
wouldnt be used out-and-about so size, trendiness etc is not important.
I like the Beyers and Sennheisers.

I'd say go to a decent store and try some out. Personally I've got
Sennheiser HD600s which I love; they're out of your price range but
definitely give some of the other Sennheisers a try.

By the way, if anyone convinces you to try Bose, give them a *very* long
test. On first impression they sound impressive but as far as I can tell
it's a very unnatural sound that will quickly get tiring.

Apart from Sennheiser and Beyer, it could be worth giving Sony a try. I used
to have a couple of pairs and found them very comfortable and pretty good
for the price.

Anyone here got the Bayer DT100 cans?, is it me or do they sound very
coloured in comparison to most anything else?..

Yes they are, but they are extensively used in Radio as everyone is
familiar with their colourations. Their other properties (good sound
isolation, ruggedness, reasonable comfort) make them the preferred
choice. Occasionally, I would come across a jock who provided his own
headphones, as he couldn't stand the DT100s. His employers would make
him sign a waiver against hearing damage if he used anything other than
the officially-sanctioned DT100s with SPL protection.
