Default Impedance

Got an old Aiwa (IIRC) amp driving some 4 ohm speakers. Getting one of

Could it be the old volume pot or caused by the 4 ohm speakers running
of an 8 ohm amp?

Most quoted amplifier load and speaker impedances are nominal - speakers
vary in impedance with frequency.

Easy way to check if the load is too low for the amp is to wire the
speakers in series and connect to the suspect channel only, ans see it it
still occurs. But my guess is the fault is elsewhere.
