Default decent speakers????

There are certainly some decent small speakers in that price range (a
friend has some Mordaunt-Short MS902s which I'm rather fond of, for
example). If you've got a local Richer Sounds, then wander along and
see what they have on offer at the moment; I've always found them
friendly and willing to let you try speakers before you buy.

The recommendation elsewhere in the thread for decent headphones is
also worthwhile -- if your dad's into headphones then manufacturers
like Sennheiser and Grado have extremely good products well under the
£150 mark.
