Default QUAD 44 CD/Aux Vs Tape & hum

Hi,

Odd phenomena, but I wonder if anyone can explain.

I have a Quad 44 which feeds a Radford valve amp. I power the amp from
the slaved mains sockets on the 44, so the amp 'sees' ground through
the preamp.

If I play my CD player through the Quad CD/Aux input - sounds fine.

If I play my CD player through either Tape input - bad humm ,
irrespective of sensitivy settings.

If I play my DVD player through CD input - fine

If I play my DVD player through either Tape inputs - fine.

So I guess the CD player 'earth' is somehow different to the DVD
player ? The player is pretty old. I assume that the CD/Aux module
somehow isolates the earth from the player. There I guess the
amp/preamp are joined both via the mains earth and also the signal
ground, but that does'nt appear to cause a problem.
