If it does not work downstairs, then why not place the frame antenna
upstairs and extend the connecting lead.

Some light gauge twin flex ought to be fine.


Yes I have antenna but not the inclination to run 40 metres of wiring
through walls/doors/ceilings to get an improved signal.


** So your house has no windows to pass a thin wire out and up ??


If there is no
alternative it will stay as a CD/cassette player.


** Any antenna needs to be located somewhere that a radio signal can get
too.

Must be very unpleasant for you living in that old air raid shelter.
