Yes, I have them (NOS military Mullards) in my KT88 - perfectly fine.
(I believe one of the reasons they were originally selected by AG is

I suspect you are right about the causes of EF86 price rise - which
in a
sense pleases me because I should be able to get 6AU6s cheaply.
Note you will need dinky little B7G sockets for them...
