Not that pretty lights bother me (as in I don't need them) its a
shame
that AS can't get the same colour displays for each of their items
of
kit.

Yes and, if you closely, you will see that the drawer doesn't close
too
prettily either - small details that spoil an otherwise inexpensive
and
useful bit of kit (plays MP3 Cds) that wouldn't take a lot to sort
out!

Oh yeah.
How does it compare with the 63MkII for sound quality? I've never come
across anything that matches those Marantz players for warmth it their
price level.

Using the Marantz' own internal attenuation and juggling pause buttons
to perfectly time align and level match the same CD (CD and copy
thereof) in both players the sound was *indistinguishable* from one
player to the other. A number of different people here (3 or 4?)
simply
couldn't tell which player was playing at any time, even when I
switched
back and forth (seamlessly) on the various amps I used - no ifs or
buts - 100%!!

Consequently, I shunted the Marantz out on eBay and the AS CDP now
resides in my overflowing 'spares cupboard'..!!

It's possible, of course, the rest of my kit may have masked
differences
that other kit might have shown up but I seriously doubt it....

Nope, no illusion. All CD players costing more than £1.75 now sound
perfect. There is no such thing as a high end CD player any more.

Agreed. When I mentioned the comparison here a while back there was a
reaction from someone who said the internal attenuation in the Marantz
wouldn't be doing the output any favours, but just using it normally (no
attenuation at all) on various kit combinations never once led me to
believe the sound was discernably different to the AS CDP or any of the
DVDPs I use to play CDs!!
