Default Ortofon OM 10 or 2M red - which to choose

Hi guys,

I am in a process of upgrading my Ortofon 5E cartridge from the
factory supplied 5E (with my Debut III) turn table to either the OM 10
or the just released 2M red.

I mainly listen to Jazz and Rock which means I am looking for
sufficient detail and bass at a budget cost. Both of these cart's are
around the same price mark.

I would like to know user experiences with both of them as I can't
seem to find anyone here (in Australia) who has done this comparative
study. Any tips will be of great help.

I'm surprised your fellow countryman (the one with all the answers)
hasn't kicked in here? Anyway, I haven't heard either of those carts so
I can't comment and, even if I had, my opinion wouldn't necessary help
you.

All I would say is the step up from a 5E to a 10 is more of an
'upnibble' than an upgrade - the Ortofons (and Goldrings) had a common
body design which could be upgraded by means of better profile needles -
the improvement being more in terms of tracking capability than anything
significant in terms of tonality, I gather. I upgraded a 5E to an OM20
with great effect (much better tracking) and have a 520 Mk II (which I
would have thought would be ideal for Rock, as it isn't shy), having
been advised the '20s' were a good compromise between price and
perfomance in their respective ranges.

That all said, out of the two carts you mention I would say go for the
2M Red - it's new, it's hardly likely to be *worse* than older range and
it looks tha bollox:

Even better, Noel Keywood would give it 5 of his 'globes'....

How bad is that?
