Hi,
I have a Denon analogue tuner and an an old (but excellent) AR amp. I have
acquired a Sony XDL 40W3000 LCD TV and a Sony HDR with Freeview which I
can
play though the amp. Both the later of course give digital radio
reception.
My question is which one(s) to go for in terms of quality for listening to
the radio (particularly classical music)
Thanks
Gordon
The Freeview radio will be better quality than the FM, particularly
for classical (R3?). The digital source is not compressed (dynamics,
not data) and is a much more realistic version of the original than
the FM, which unfortunately has to go through a signal processor
before it gets to the transmitter.
Unfortunately, Radio 3 on DSAT and Freeview are also compressed. As the
signal is MPEG 2 rather than FM, the results are somewhat different, and as
I understand it, R3 is not so heavily compressed on DSAT and Freeview as it
is on FM. Note also that the processing is different during the day and in
the evening. Evening processing is much lighter, possibly even just overload
catching, as it is anticipated that evening listening will be done under
better conditions than daytime, when there is much listening in the car, in
the kitchen, etc.
All that assumes you have good clear FM reception of course. If you
live in an area with multipath, then FM will be further degraded.
Very true, but note that, at least where I live out in rural Suffolk, with
Freeview signal strength is quite low which results in more than the
occasional click from Freeview, whereas my FM is clean. I have no idea
about DSAT.
As our transatlantic friends will have it, Your Mileage May Vary.
