Default Hard-drive based "cd multichanger" ?

I'm trying to find a device like a hard-drive based "cd multichanger"
which has the same interface as a normal multichanger so it can
replace the one I have but which will allow me to copy my entire music
collection to it in the form of a bunch of directories containing MP3
encoded music albums.

Do't know about the interface, but I think there was something called a
music keg.

You mean something like this:

Got one of these myself, sounds great (better than the iPod). I've used
a 16GB USB flash drive, currently got 150 albums stored on it and it's
just over half full (high-bitrate VBR MP3, average 250Kbit).

You could presumably plug a bus-powered USB hard drive into it as well,
although with high capacity USB pendrives becoming cheaper I'd be
inclined to go that way for in-car and mobile use, 16GB for around £35
and no moving parts.

That link is for Sony systems, there's a similar unit for Pioneer and
Alpine. There's also interface kits available for OEM head units (Honda,
Audi, VW, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota by the looks of things).
