Arcam CD72 stopped playing CD-R discs

Change either the burner or/and the brand of disc.
I have also had equivalent problems with CDR and DVD. There seems to be a
'lottery' wrt to which combinations of burner, burn speed, and disc brand
work on which players.
In a similar manner, my Arcam DV137 has happily played DVD+R and +RW
discs from TDK, and also -R and -RW... until recently. It still plays the
discs recorded in the past, but is less reliable with newly made
recordings. Tried two different recorders with much the same results. The
recordings all play OK on the recorders.
Suspect that the manufacturing spec for the blank discs has altered. Afraid
this entire area is a minefield with no reliable maps, and someone keeps
altering the terrain. :-)
Thanks Jim. I have since written to Arcam who replied in double quick
time. Their reply might be of general interest, so I am pasting it here.

"The only issue with CDR type discs is the relatively low reflectivity
when compare to a standard Red Book disc – it may be that the Liteon
does not “etch” the disc as heavily although this symptom may be
highlighting a drop in light level from the CD72 laser optic.
We may be able to resolve the issue with a new laser optic but would
require a sample of a disc that at this point will not play.
Estimated laser replacement cost will be £147.95 inc vat – my
suggestions is that you return the player to your original or local
dealer and we can arrange service from this point.
I hope this helps."
