meant to be used with a on screen guide of some sort.

So one with a display is really needed - and preferably one where the
display can give the number you've assigned to a channel via some form of
'favourites' system.

The old Sony VTX-D800 comes close as it has a button to go to the radio
channels and you can arrange it so button one on the remote gives R1 etc -
but it has no display.

How about a Kathrein UFS 790? Has a sixteen digit display which
announces the radio station explicitly. A bit excessive in some
respects, having both satellite and terrestrial tuners and a CI slot,
but it's quite a small box and the display makes it usable without a
TV (once set up).
I've been using a previous model for three years without problems.
