getting old reel to reels going
Ihave changed accounts, hate hotmail...
As I was saying, I suspect some tapes may well have the sticky disease so
I'll have to be very careful. Certainly a TDK reel I tried on another old
machine that was half track unfortunately jammed with nasty screeching
noises.
So much for long life coatings eh?

More or less, but I know from bitter experience that things like EQ and
azimuth can screw up on a deck that did not make the recordings. I'm
really sorry I sold an old Sony I had, but I needed the dosh at the time.

Is there any company who can get things like Tandberg 3341 type decks up
and
running which have belt and clutch problems etc. The knobs fell to bits

well, but that is superficial.
I have some tapes I want to try to rescue. Or is it better to buy some
other
machine already working?

You can try these
http://www.tape-drive-repair.com/
but I suspect it may not be worth the effort, and something cheap but
working from Ebay is the best bet. I presume you really only want it
for this one transcription job, and aren't much interested in it as a
going concern afterwards...?
