I'm not especially bothered - we've agreed a compromise on the price -

Occam's razor tells you to look no further. On the other hand, I don't
know how long you have had this (maybe you have forgotten), but could
there be some obscure submenu that let you switch off the speakers you
weren't using?


The menus look like something from an 80s computer screen, and made
little sense to me - especially since I didn't need any of the AV
functions. I've looked in the manual and the only other thing I could
think to try was a factory reset - which he's done.

Best to just let it go, things break.

If a factory reset (poke a paper clip in a hole on the back, if memory
serves) does nothing, then yes, it is probably broken.
