The CD100 model Philips developed was very basic with few features ( not
even remote control) - plus it employed 14 bit D to A converters cos
Philips simply had no 16 bit ones available.
But Philips were using 4x oversampling, whereas Sony weren't using
oversampling in the CDP101. So in terms of dynamic resolution it's about
even.
I suppose that shows how shortcomings in one area can lead to advances
in others, but, lets face it, in spite of the comments by some
enthusiastic owners, neither is up to the quality of modern units.
I have a working original Sony D50 portable player. It was a little
marvel when I bought it in 1985, but these days you can get an even
smaller unit with better quality reproduction for less than $50. Even
then the market for such devices has been superseded by the various MP3
players available for even less cost.
