"PC Magazine" went under (stiffing me for over half a year's

don't think I'll renew.
But, this is nothing new; 25-30 years ago, I subscribed to "Stereo
Review," "Hi Fidelity," and "Audio;" they all bit the big one.
Ahh, the memories. Most people of this generation's age group don't
realize that there was a time in the not so distant past when computers
existed only as large main frames in corporate or academic facilities,
and were controlled by stacks of cards with little holes punched in
them. The "geeks" of that time were folks like me, and apparently you,
who fretted over such things as IM distortion, front end overload,
amplifier clipping, and S/N ratio. We spent endless hours arguing the
relative merits of vacuum tube vs solid state equipment, moving magnet
vs moving coil phono cartridges, and acoustic suspension vs bass reflex
speaker enclosures.
Playing treble was difficult with many distortions. Upper frequency
response (records or tape) was crummy until CDs in 1980s.
Bass reproduction was warm and slow.
Sound of wires debate rarely heard then.
In those days I would upgrade my hi fi equipment every couple of years,
in a seemingly never-ending quest for perfect sound reproduction. Now I
look around and see the Polk Audio tower speakers, Hafler power amp, and
NAD preamp that I bought over 20 years ago. Meanwhile, last weekend I
replaced the hard drive in my laptop with a 500GB model so that I can
set up a multi-boot system with Windows XP and Linux, the third time I
have changed out the HD in this less-than-2-year-old computer.
