The point of the centre speaker is to lock dialogue to the screen
centre even for members of the audience who are well away from the
sweet spot.
Problem is that speech frequencies are the most critical to the ear so
require a very good match for the third speaker. And most designed for
this job - ie to fit underneath the screen etc - are more often made to
withstand a thrashing.
Indeed. Which is why in professional use the centre speaker will usually be
identical to the L & R ones. And as we agree for domestic use a phantom
centre is usually preferable.
