I am leaning towards that as a solution. There are plenty of steel 6U
rack cases and I could just add front and rear panels. It makes it a
free standing unit then rather than rack mountable but it certainly
widens the options a lot.


No, I meant a 6U panel that is intended as a blanking plate in a rack.
Loads of those around.
