Re-capping is preventitive maintenance.

I'd call that a repair.

Frankly, everything is damaged by use. The rate of damage of many passive
parts is slow, sometimes glacial.

Capacitors wear out, they are a consumable.


Electrolytics wear out the fastest, but they can meet spec for many decades
if well made and not abused. Most other kinds of capacitors wear so slowly
as to not be noticable.

No difference from spark plugs in a car being replaced.


Interesting that you mention that. I still remember changing spark plugs
every 3,000 miles, and being rewarded with improved performance as a result.
Currently the spark plugs in my Milan are specified for replacement at
100,000 miles. IME this is actually a conservative number.

Part of a service to get it's best performance.
